Santon North Street, using vacant space in its ownership, is offering temporary affordable workspace to creative and
light industrial businesses in the Phoenix Estate, to assist with keeping businesses in the North Street Quarter, both short term and long term.
The company, which owns much of the land and buildings in the Phoenix Estate, has made over 11,000 sq ft of different spaces available at low market rents, both now and during the construction of the first phases of proposed development of the area.
Construction work has also now begun at Malling Brooks to create 75,000 sq ft of purpose built employment space for light industrial businesses, which has been taken up by some local employers and some outside the town, but there is still some limited space available.
Said a spokesman for Santon North Street, “We have worked hard to provide affordable rents now for local creative businesses with short term temporary space – which can only be low rent because it is temporary – and then longer term permanent to provide subsidised rents within our pro- posed development of the area, creating long term sustainable jobs, giving employ- ers a future to invest further and grow their businesses to create more jobs.”
Santon North Street and Lewes District Council submitted a joint planning application in March to regenerate the Phoenix Industrial Estate and create the North Street Quarter, including 416 new homes, 40% of them (165) affordable, in addition 15% Lewes first priority housing, vital town flood defences, new riverside public spac- es and walkways and a new Health Centre. All of this combined with Malling Brooks, provides 140,000 sq ft of well-designed workspace, accommodating 475 sustainable, registered jobs.
