Recreation grounds consultation 3

The comprehensive public consultation with Lewes residents about how they would like Pells Recreation Ground and Malling Fields to be upgraded is reaching the final stage with two events taking place in early July.

Friday, July 7, 12:00 – 18:00 at St John’s Hall, Talbot Terrace (for Pells Recreation Ground)

Saturday, July 8, 10:00 – 14:00 at Malling Community Centre (for Malling Fields)

These events are an opportunity for residents to view and comment on the detailed proposals before they are submitted for final planning approval.  The plans will also be available on the North Street Quarter website along with a facility to comment nearer the time.

The public consultation began last year to involve Lewes residents in planning improvements to the two recreation spaces.  Feedback has enabled the landscape architects, working with Santon North Street and Lewes District Council, to produce designs that reflect the needs and aspirations of the local community.

Cllr Andy Smith, Leader of Lewes District Council, said: “It’s really exciting to see how the plans for Pells Recreation Ground and Malling Fields have come together and I’m delighted that there has been so much input from local residents.  The facilities at both recreational spaces, along with the new skatepark, are making Lewes an even more appealing place to live and visit. I hope that lots of people will come and look at the plans and make their final comments at the consultation events.”

The improvements to these public spaces are part of the North Street Quarter development. Funds have been set aside to upgrade the two recreational areas to provide attractive, safe and well-designed play spaces.

The North Street Quarter development will bring considerable assets to the town: including 416 new houses, of which 40% (165) are affordable homes; a new health hub; a public car park with 330 spaces; extensive works to complete the town’s flood defences and new public access to the river with a footbridge and a riverside promenade.

The first phase of the development, which comprises the majority of the housing, the health hub, car park and flood defences, is scheduled to start next year.

Clive Wilding, Director of Santon North Street, said: “Lewes residents have been instrumental in developing the plans for Pells Recreation Ground and Mallling Fields in the same way they took part in the three year North Street Quarter public consultation.  I’m very grateful for their input which ensures that we can develop fantastic facilities that will benefit everyone living and working in this lovely town.”

A full set of plans will be uploaded to the website in early July.  There will also be a facility to provide feedback for people who are unable to attend the events or have further thoughts.
